Directed by the renowned Chinese director Zhang and co-produced by China and the US, "The Great Wall" was shot in China with a budget of 135 million US dollars, considered the most expensive film ever made in the country.
It mainly tells a story based in the Song Dynasty era, when a European mercenary played by Damon helps a Chinese elite troop to fight against monsters named “Taotie” at the Great Wall.
The crew encountered multiple challenges during the production process.
“Half of us were speaking Mandarin and half were speaking English, but everyone had made a lot of movies, so there was shorthand that developed pretty quickly,” said Damon, the lead actor.
For the director, "the most difficult part was finding similarities between the two cultures - to find things that people can understand.”
"The Great Wall" was a great hit after its debut in China on December 16, with its current worldwide box office around 224 million US dollars in more than 33 countries and regions.
