The Jinggangshan and the Kunlunshan, both under the South China Sea Fleet of the Chinese navy, took part in a number of exercises, including comprehensive attack and defense, the use of weapons, island landing by air-cushioned landing crafts and vertical troop transportation by helicopters.

During the drill, which lasted several days, the group drove back attacks from "enemy aircraft" by precision strikes with the help of an advanced radar defense system. It also used its electronic warfare system to intercept missile attacks from the enemy.
After the group reached the target waters, marines came out of the air-cushioned crafts and helicopters and launched a successful amphibious assault on the target island.
