Saturday's Google doodle paid homage to Chinese linguist Zhou Youguang on what would have been his 112th birthday. He died on January fourteenth last year.
Zhou Youguang helped create the Chinese phonetic alphabet called Pinyin, earning the title, "Father of Pinyin." The international standard for Romanized Chinese has helped learners and translators both inside and outside China. Today, schoolchildren learn Pinyin before characters, and it is often used to input characters on smartphones and computers.
