Several people were seriously injured after a vehicle collided with pedestrians overnight in north London, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

The Sun Newspaper said two worshipers were feared dead after a van rammed people near a mosque in north London and some have been injured in what mosque chairman Mohammed Kozbar described as a “terrorist attack”. A man leaped out of the van with a knife outside a Muslim center and one person was stabbed.

"This is a terrible incident," British Prime Minister Theresa May said in an e-mail statement.

 "All my thoughts are with those who have been injured, their loved ones, and the emergency services on the scene."

The Muslim Council of Britain said the vehicle hit people as they were leaving Finsbury Park mosque, Reuters news agency reported. 

British Counter-Terrorism officers have joined regular police to help investigate, the Guardian said.

The Met said officers were called shortly after midnight on Monday following "reports of a vehicle in collision with pedestrians" in the Finsbury Park area.  

Earlier this month, eight people were killed and 48 injured when three attackers drove a van into people on London Bridge and then went on a stabbing rampage. This followed an attack in March, when a van drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, killing five and injuring some 50.
