Police say the death toll from a bus that plummeted off a steep cliff near Peru's capital Lima has climbed to 48. Six survivors with serious injuries were evacuated to nearby hospitals. The bus crashed into a trailer truck and skidded off the road on Tuesday. It occurred at a dangerous turn in the road known as the "Devil's Curve".
The Bavarian allies of German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative party on Tuesday called for medical tests of minors seeking asylum. The conservatives said tests in other EU countries found a proportion of asylum seekers had given incorrect ages. The German Medical Association warned the age test could be unethical and inaccurate.
A Canadian man who was held in captive in Afghanistan for five years has been arrested. He faces 15 charges, including sexual assault and forcible confinement. The alleged offences reportedly took place after Joshua Cole, his wife and their three children born in captivity came back to Canada last October.
