Although the UN's new report on South Sudan warns about the risk of genocide, the risk has been considerably diminished, despite continued fighting. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says his organization is working closely with regional bodies and the African Union to secure a lasting peace in South Sudan.
Guterres says he and his office have achieved complete agreement with the regional neighboring countries Sudan, Uganda, Kenya, and Ethiopia to mitigate military action and gradually move to a cessation of hostilities. Despite small conflicts still taking place, Guterres pointed out that the risk of genocide has diminished considerably.
The UN is currently seeking to provide tangible solutions to regional bodies to end the conflict.
