A former adviser to the Kremlin said the US missile strike in Syria was a distraction from humanitarian disasters in other conflict zones around the world.
“It’s a way of distraction from other failures of the US and its allies,” former Kremlin insider Alexander Nekrassov said.
“There’s disaster in Iraq and Yemen, where there’s genocide going on. It’s quite ridiculous that we are hearing from Western powers that (Bashar al-Assad) is a criminal and Assad must go,” he told CGTN.
He said Assad was the leader of the only government in the region fighting ISIL and Al Qaeda. While Western governments want Assad gone, they have not presented any possible replacements.
“ISIL and Al Qaeda will replace him if he goes,” Nekrassov said.
The US air strike in Syria was the first direct attack by the American military on the Syrian government since civil war began in the Middle Eastern country six years ago.
Foreign leaders met in Italy to discuss the situation in Syria. The G7 meeting focused heavily on encouraging Russian leadership to move away from its support for Syria’s president.
