A new style of art is emerging out of southwest China's Yunnan Province. Named after an ancient species that once inhabited the area, "Nanchong Art" embodies many of the attributes that make Yunnan unique. Take a look.
Ceramic works, sculptures, and huge paintings are on display at an exhibition center at Yuxi Normal University in Yunnan Province. The pieces are results of what's called "Nanchong Art" which is a style that's seen its popularity grow in recent years. The art center's director says the style is derived from the rich folk culture and history of Yunnan.
ZHANG HANDONG, DIRECTOR YUXI NORMAL UNIVERSITY EXHIBITION CENTER "In general, 'Nanchong Art' is the embodiment of Yunnan's folk culture and history. The items on display are not just some realistic works. Instead, the artists use the way of expressionism to create the artworks, to represent people's wisdom and rich culture of the area."
Zhang is one of the art form's pioneers. He says unlike other styles, there aren't any clear emotions on the faces of individual sculptures. Viewed as a whole, they could have a strong visual impact on visitors.
Nanchong is an ancient worm species that once lived in the area. Zhang says using that name is a way to highlight the local features of the art form.
