A dead fin whale found near Shanghai will be preserved as a specimen in the city’s Science and Technology Museum.
The whale belonged to a suborder of baleen whales, and was listed as an endangered species in China.

The 22-meter male whale was found dead on March 20. Biology experts from Shanghai Ocean University and Shanghai Science and Technology Museum said it had been dead for 10 days.

While biologists are still trying to find the cause of death of the whale, its left pectoral fin is missing. Experts said the fin was cut and the whale's body part had already decayed.
Tang Wenqiao, a professor of ichthyology with Shanghai Ocean University, said it was rare to see such a large whale in Shanghai.
"Baleen whales eat sardines and usually live in big oceans like the Pacific,” Tang said.
The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum said they will make the fin whale a specimen and the process could take up to two years.
