Forever Lost: Nanjing Massacre survivor was stabbed, saw family killed at age 8
[]
During the Nanjing Massacre, seven of Xia Shuqin's nine family members were killed right in front of her. She managed to survive. It happened decades ago, but time hasn't dimmed her painful memories.
XIA SHUQIN "The Japanese troops killed my 7 relatives. Only my 4-year old sister and I were escaped alive. I shook everyone, but none of them survived." NOT A LIVING SOUL SURVIVES.
Xia Shuqin, one of the Nanjing Massacre survivors, is now 88 years old. Xia lost seven of nine family members at the age of 8. In the morning of December 13th, 1937, Japanese troops entered her house and killed her parents, grandparents and two sisters. Xia was stabbed three times and passed out. Living besides their families' bodies with hunger, fear and desperation for about two weeks, Xia and her 4-year-old sister eventually were found by a neighbor.
XIA SHUQIN "I try to shake my grandparents awake, but they didn't make it. The blood and brains of my family were everywhere on the wall. We climbed over the bodies and tried to wake up my two sisters, but neither of them survived. Four out of six were killed in this small room."
The picture tells the story of what happened. Bodies on the streets, survivors waking up covered in blood. The picture was shot by John Magee, an American preacher who recorded the outrage with his camera. During that dark period, many international people staying in Nanjing saved as many people as they could. John Rabe, the chairman of the Nanking Safety Zone, along with others, saved over 200, 000 people in just 4 square kilometers.
XIA SHUQIN "I was stabbed three times by the Japanese troops, I felt so much pain at that time. My arms and clothes were covered with blood, as well as my back and legs. My 4-year-old sister was crying for mom, but I, myself could not even walk."
The Diaries of John Rabe, as well as hundreds of thousands of documents, serve as records of the outrage. Although confronted with proof, the Japanese government still denies the Nanjing Massacre.
XIA SHUQIN "Oppose war and cherish peace, only then can we live a better life. I want to remind other people of this history. It cannot be forgotten."
For the survivors, the scars of that winter 80 years ago will never heal and memories will never fade. For Xia Shuqin, she cannot forget how Japanese soldiers butchered her family in that winter, and now she still lives in the pain of that bitter experiences.
