Extreme Weather: China renews blue alert for cold snap
[]
China's meteorological authority on Monday renewed a blue alert, the lowest level in a four-tier warning system, for a cold front in some regions. On Monday and Tuesday, temperatures across central, southern, and northeastern China are expected to drop a further 10 degrees Celsius. Heavy snowfall has wreaked havoc for transportation and infrastructure, but as Wu Haojun finds out, brought quite a bit of fun for some.
Despite the best efforts of man and machine, nature does what it wills. Record low temperatures and heavy snow halted road and air traffic collapsed entire vegetable markets and damaged power lines. In a remote village in China's eastern Anhui Province, these men have been working around the clock fixing local power lines.
But all is not doom and gloom. For those who are willing to embrace the cold, beauty is all around and there's much fun to be had.
The Redstone Wild Valley in Guizhou Province is just one of many scenic spots in the country that has witnessed an unexpected uptick in tourist visits following record snowfall and plummeting temperatures. Meanwhile, zoos across the nation are adopting measures to make life for their residents as comfortable as possible during this snowy winter.
In the Xi'an zoo, air-conditioning is on full blast and for a few particularly fortunate ones, it's hot springs time. But there are also those that have fully embraced the cold. Hibernation is out of the question and the fun is on.
