The year of the dog is coming up on the Chinese lunar calendar. And it's being marked by Canada Post. For the past two decades, it has issued Chinese zodiac stamps to mark each animal's turn.
The set of stamps come in two versions: Chinese and international. The Chinese version depicts a Chinese pastoral dog, while the international one portrays a Shih Tzu. The stamps have strong elements of Chinese culture in them. The colors used are mainly red and gold, two popular colors during Chinese new year. The dogs are depicted via the traditional Chinese art of paper cutting. This zodiac set has been hailed as the one with the most Chinese characteristics.
MR. YANG CUSTOMER "I buy these stamps out of interest. Collecting stamps is a good hobby. Each zodiac year has a different animal, so each set of stamps have different meanings. I will pass on these stamps to my son, grandson, to my family."
SALES MANAGER CANADA POST "In terms of the artistry and design, it's very different. That's the beauty of the stamps we do. Because they also tell a story. Our design includes the traditional colors of Chinese red and Chinese gold. We also have a story about the history of Chinese new year and the year of the dog. There's a lot of thought that goes into it."
The stamps are sold in couplets, with two, three, four and six of the stamps joining together as a set. They also come in an entire sheet of stamps sold together. Special albums are also available for these stamps, boosting their appeal and presentation. CGTN.
