A steady and healthy development of China-US bilateral relations accords with the mutual interests of the two countries, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday afternoon.
Wang made the remarks during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who arrived in Beijing earlier in the day.
China is the last leg of Tillerson’s East Asia tour, during which he visited Japan and South Korea.
“Though there are disputes between us, China and the US can still boast good partnership as long as we adhere to the principles of non-conflict, mutual respect, as well as win-win cooperation,” Wang noted.
Tillerson said he already had an extensive exchange of views with Wang on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) issue. China and the US share a common view that the tension on the Korean Peninsula has escalated to a dangerous level, the US official said.
Wang said the Korean Peninsula issue should be solved through communication and peaceful diplomatic approach.
“China hopes relevant parties stay calm and exercise restraint, and do more to ease the tension.”
Wang added that China is willing to keep close ties with the US to negotiate and cooperate on solving the Korean Peninsula issue.
