National Basketball Association: San Antonio 114 - Cleveland 102
[]
We bounce along to the NBA, where LeBron James was looking to make history as the Cleveland Cavaliers rolled into San Antonio. The 33-year-old on the verge of scoring 30-thousand points, he needed 8-points to cross that threshold. More importantly though, he was looking to inspire his team to a victory, as the Cavs had dropped 9 of 12 games. At 33 years and 24 days, James could better Kobe Bryant's old mark by about six months.
LBJ gets close to that milestone late in the opening quarter -- hitting the jumper, he is now just a point away from 30-thousand.
He has a chance to get to that magic number a little later as he again nails the jump shot, he becomes just the seventh player to get to that mark.
And he gets some love from his teammates, one of the first to congratulate him is Dwyane Wade, his old running mate with the Miami Heat. And the fans in the stands also acknowledge the achievement. He is just the seventh player in NBA history to reach that milestone -- the others are all in the hall-of-fame. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain and Dirk Nowitzki.
And another look at the basket that puts him with those luminaries.
Ok, lots of basketball still to play -- and the King plays some bully ball, getting his own rebound. Cleveland up 3. He had 28.
San Antonio takes the lead before the half -- Tony Parker using the pick and firing the jumper. 8-point edge.
LaMarcus Aldridge then cans the turnaround jumper. The big man would have 30 points as the lead swells to a dozen points.
Cavs staying in it though and cause a turnover -- and it is the four-time MVP out in front of the pack -- as he throws it down. 3-point game now.
Late in the third, though the Spurs get some breathing room, Patty Mills nailing the long ball -- and it is now a 7-point game.
Off to the fourth now, and the hosts on the fastbreak --- and Dejounte Murray is able to finish. San Antonio win it by 12.
But it was LeBron's night, as he is congratulated by San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich. In other games, Garrett Temple scored a career-high 34 points as Sacramento topped Orlando. Russell Westbrook hit a lay-up with 3.3 seconds to go to lift OKC over Brooklyn. Golden State was too good for New York, picking up an 11-point win. And the Lakers held off Boston, as Marcus Smart missed a jumper at the buzzer. LA wins in 108-107.
