Sunken ferry Sewol emerged from waters off South Korea's southwestern coast at 3:45 a.m. local time on Thursday, 1,073 days after the accident. The recovery of the vessel started on Wednesday night, with salvage efforts led by Shanghai Salvage, a Chinese state-run consortium of companies.
The Sewol Ferry capsized in 2014 with mostly teenagers on board. A total of 295 people died, and nine others remain unaccounted for.
The tragedy dealt a heavy blow to now-ousted president Park Geun-hye who came under fierce criticism at home over her seven hours of public silence and the government’s poor initial response.
