On Wednesday the Hong Kong Heritage Museum kicked off the presentation of a collection of artwork from the world-renowned Louvre Museum.

The exhibition is meant to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong SAR's return to the Chinese Mainland and the 25th anniversary of the annual festival Le French May, offering Chinese a rare glimpse at some of the most invaluable cultural treasures on their doorstep.

The display, titled "Inventing Le Louvre; From Palace to Museum over 800 years," features some 130 pieces, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics and tapestries, with the oldest item dating back some 2,500 years.

The Louvre was firstly built as a military fortress in the late 12th century and reconstructed in the 16th century as a royal palace. It later became an art museum, opening to the public after the French revolution in 1789. Now, it is the largest museum in the world.
