Julian Assange Issue: Ecuador grants Assange citizenship, seeks mediation to solve standoff

Ecuador has granted citizenship to Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, according to the foreign ministry. The South American country is also said to be seeking mediation to solve the standoff over Assange and is calling for cooperation from the UK and the international community.
Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa told foreign reporters on Tuesday that a third country or person could lead a potential mediation on the issue. Julian Assange was granted asylum in the country's embassy in London by former president Rafael Correa in 2012, and has been holed up there since then.
