The search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH-370 was called off exactly a year ago on January 17th after years failure. US company Ocean Infinity will start looking for the plane again on Wednesday. For the relatives and loved ones of those on board, the search has never stopped.
JIANG HUI RELATIVE OF MH370 PASSENGER "If we are to find MH370, through this search or any search in the future, I only want to know where the passengers are, and what happened to them. Simple as that."
Jiang Hui's mother, was traveling from Kuala Lumpur on the mysterious flight. It's been nearly four years since she and 226 other passengers went missing. Families like Jiang's have never given up.
JIANG HUI RELATIVE OF MH370 PASSENGER "We have organized relatives of the passengers from Malaysia, Australia and so on to visit Australian transportation authorities, maritime experts, and university professors to push for the search to continue. The Malaysian Airlines MH370 was on its way to Beijing when it disappeared on March 8th, 2014. With the passengers were 12 crew members when the plane lost contact and vanished from all radars and satellites.
The only pieces of the plane that's turned up are bits of debris that washed up on the beaches of the African island of Reunion. MH370 has become one of the biggest mysteries in aviation history. It's also the biggest and most expensive aviation search of all time. The official search was suspended in January 2017.
JIANG HUI RELATIVE OF MH370 PASSENGER "To push for the restart of the search, we visited Australia, Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, among other countries. We hope the Malaysian government can see our efforts, to see that we've never given up, even though it has been almost four years so that the Malaysian government won't give up either."
On January 10th, the private American company Ocean Infinity signed a deal with the Malaysian government to resume the search. Ocean Infinity personnel are scheduled to reach the mission area and start the search on January 17th. With newer technology, and the company's commitment to "no cure, no pay" and a 90-day time limit, the latest development offers a ray of hope.
LIOW TIONG LAI MALAYSIA TRANSPORT MINISTER "Based on the agreement, Ocean Infinity will undertake search operation to locate flight MH370 at an area of 25,000 square kilometers search at the South Indian Ocean. So within the priority search area of this South Indian Ocean, based on the principle of 'no cure, no payout' - no fee basis."
Jiang and the other families say the search should not stop in case Ocean Infinity fails.
JIANG HUI RELATIVE OF MH370 PASSENGER "Even if Ocean Infinity fails to find MH370, we hope the Malaysian government can use this 70 million dollars to establish a bounty and create a long-term searching system. So that other parties may also participate in the search."
The search may or may not yield any results. What families of those on board are desperate to find, after four years in the dark, is definitive closure.
