The DPRK launched a ballistic missile from a site near its border with China on Sunday morning, Yonhap reported citing South Korea's military.
"North Korea [the DPRK] fired an unidentified missile at around 5:27 a.m. today from an area in the vicinity of Kusong, North Pyongan Province," the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.
The projectile flew about 30 minutes and landed in the Sea of Japan, according to Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
This launch is the first since South Korean President Moon Jae-in took office on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, US Pacific Command detected the early morning DPRK missile launch but said that it wasn't consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile.
