Nine-year-old Jiahui might carry her scars for the rest of her life – but as of this week, they will no longer show on her face. The girl from east China’s Shandong Province lost her mother five years ago in a car accident that had left her with a scarred face. /VCG Photo

But earlier this week, she went under the knife for a three-hour surgery that aimed to reduce the appearance of the cuts. On her second day of recovery, she was photographed smiling, despite having her head wrapped in white gauze fabric. /VCG Photo

Jiahui struggled with the marks of the mishap for years, until a local cosmetic hospital decided to cover the fees of the three-stage treatment, which could not be afforded by her father who is a fruit vendor. “I want to get rid of the scars so my friends won’t ask about where they came from,” the girl had said. /VCG Photo

Jiahui will receive her second operation in about three months after she recovers from the first one, in the hope the procedure would help the wounds of the unfortunate event heal. /VCG Photo
