A Russian pilot's body has been repatriated to Russia, where a solemn ceremony was held to commemorate his death. Major Filipov's jet was struck by a missile. He ejected successfully but was surrounded by al-Qaida-linked militants when he landed. To avoid being captured he blew himself up. Russian President Putin awarded him posthumously with the nation's highest honor, the Hero of Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry and other officials attended the commemorating ceremony. Over thirty thousand people in the pilot's home-town of Voronezh also attended. The Russian military is investigating where the missile came from.
