Dakar Rally - Bikes: Sunderland wins stage three
[]
We hit the road now for action from the Dakar rally where British biker Sam Sunderland had the chance to get back on the top of the leader board when the desert race entered its third stage, going from Pisco to San Juan de Marcona in Peru. Sunderland, who won the event in 2017, slipped during the previous section on Sunday, allowing Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort in for the win after finishing more than six minutes off the pace. However, on this occasion there would be no complacency from the 28-year-old in the 296 kilometer stretch.
After picking up the 19th stage win of his career the day before, Bort can only manage to finish 30th overall here following a massive navigational error where he misses a waypoint, causing the Spaniard to turn back 15 kilometers and eventually cross the finish line 28 minutes off the pace.
Ending eight minutes behind the lead is 2016 winner Toby Price. The Australian rises from tenth in the overall standings to fourth with a third placed finish here.
Coming in second is Kevin Benavides. The Argentinian is also second in the standings after stage three.
But victorious is Sunderland and for the second time at this year's edition. The factory racing man comes out on top in three hours and 33 minutes to make up for Sunday's 10th placed finish.
In the cars category, Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah dominates from the start to move to third overall in the auto category standings after winning here thanks to a time of 4 hours and 53 minutes.
13-time winner Stephane Peterhansel of France comes in four minutes behind but its enough to take the overall lead ahead of fellow Frenchman Cyril Despres.
