Moon Jae-in of the liberal Democratic Party won over 13.4 million, or 41.1 percent, of all votes to win South Korea's presidential election, the country's National Election Commission said early on Wednesday.‍
In a speech to his supporters on Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul late Tuesday, the left-leaning candidate pledged to represent all the country's people. "I will be president for all South Koreans," he told cheering crowds.
Earlier at the headquarters of his Democratic Party of Korea, after media exit polls put him way ahead, Moon extended his gratitude to supporters and asked them to be patient for the official announcement. "I hope together we can open a new chapter of the history," he said.

Tens of thousands of voters across the country headed to polling stations on Tuesday to choose a new president from 13 candidates, two months after former leader Park Geun-hye was removed from her post due to a corruption scandal.
The turnout for this year's election was expected to reach 80 percent, which would be a record high since 1997, according to the National Election Commission.
The country's 19th president is likely to be sworn in on Wednesday.
