ISIL killed more than 50 people in an attack on two government-held villages in central Syria's Hama Province on Thursday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
The attack on the villages of Aqareb and al-Mabujeh killed at least 15 civilians and 27 pro-government fighters, with the other victims' identities still unknown, according to the Observatory.
State news agency SANA reported the attack, giving a toll of 20 civilians killed in Aqareb, but did not mention al-Mabujeh.
While the Observatory said ISIL had seized control of all or part of the two towns, SANA reported that the attack had been foiled.
The villages are north of al-Salamiya close to the only still usable road between Aleppo and other parts of Syria held by the government.
The attack was the most violent so far this year by ISIL on the road, said the Observatory.
