For hockey we go to Philadelphia where the Flyers were at home to the defending NHL champions the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pens had not won in regulation since way back on December 16th of last year, but a burst of goals in the second period would help rectify that stat.
We pick it up in the second period when Tom Dumoulin takes the puck off the side of his head, but his helmet did its job and he would be okay. Midway through the stanza, Penguins on a powerplay. Phil Kessel and Sidney Crosby work a nice give and go and Kessel beats Brian Elliott for his 17th goal of the season, 1-0 Pittsburgh.
But about thirty seconds later, the Flyers work it out from behind the Pens net and Radko Gudas has his shot tipped by James Weal to tie things up at 1.
Then another thirty seconds after that, the Penguins press hard to restore their advantage and it would be enforcer Ryan Reaves scoring a rare goal to make it 2-1 for the visitors. The goals just keep coming in thirty second instalments as Conor Sheary is going to win the race to the puck and fires it past Elliott stick side to give the Pens a 3-1 lead.
The champs would add their fourth goal in the second period when Tom Khunackl takes two whacks to find the net and it's 4-1 Pittsburgh. With six minutes to play in the game, Kessel shoots wide but Jamie Oleksiak bangs in the rebound and the Penguins go on to win 5-1, just their fourth win in their last 11 games.
There were five other games in which the winning team scored five goals as Boston hammered the Islanders 5-1, Minnesota dis the same to Florida, LA blanked Edmonton 5-0, Alex Ovechkin scored his league leading 26th goal with the overtime winner for Washington, and Anaheim shutout Vancouver 5-0.
