English F.A. Cup: Nottingham Forest 4 - Arsenal 2
[]
To England for the oldest domestic football competition in the world, the FA Cup. Last year's winners Arsenal traveled to face second tier Nottingham Forest in the third round. Since Arsene Wenger took charge of the Gunners in 1996, they have never lost at this stage but, the French manager, who is watching from the stands because of a recent touchline ban, would risk that record by naming a much changed side against the two-time Champions of Europe.
Forrest go in front after 20 minutes when Eric Lichaj heads in Kieran Dowell's free-kick to give the hosts a shock 1-0 lead. Great dive and the crowd are loving it, not so much Wenger.
Three minutes later, German defender Per Mertesacker levels for Arsenal after reacting quickest to Rob Holding's header which rebounds off the post following Theo Walcott's dead ball.
However, the American defender, Lichaj, gets his second with a well placed volley to put the Midlanders back in the lead seconds before the half time whistle.
The young center-back, Holding, then gives Forest the chance to extend their advantage 19 minutes after the break when he brings down Matty Cash in the box. Teenager Ben Brereton dispatches the penalty to make it 3-1.
Without key players, Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey, Arsenal struggle to break-through, but Danny Welbeck pulls a goal back with 12 minutes left with a tidy finish after the keeper couldn't contain the ball.
But all chances of a comeback are squashed when Mathieu Debuchy brings down ex-Gunners defender Armand Traore in the area to hand Nottingham another penalty.
Dowell slips as he takes the kick, arousing suspicions the midfielder kicked the ball twice as it goes past David Ospina. The referee allows the goal to stand and Arsenal lose 4-2.
The replay shows Dowell does contact the ball twice, but video assistant refereeing is not available. The system makes its English debut tonight. Wenger looks lonely.
In other Cup action, Harry Kane scored twice for Spurs in their 3-0 win over league two outfit Wimbledon at Wembley. Fourth tier Newport County got a last minute winner to knock out Championship side Leeds, 2-1, and West Ham could only draw 0-0 away at League One high flyers Shrewsbury in a match which saw England goalkeeper Joe Heart return to where his career began.
