When we think of metropolitan cities overlapping with urban areas, we often think of San Francisco’s Bay Area, New York and New Jersey, and even the Greater Tokyo Area – the world’s most populous region.

But don’t count out China, as the country’s southern region looks to add a new name to that list – Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
Also known as the Pearl River Delta (PRD), this cluster will be made up of China’s two Special Administrative Regions, Hong Kong and Macao, and nine mainland cities in Guangdong Province, including tech-hub Shenzhen, and trade center Guangzhou.

In 2016, the World Bank distinguished the city cluster as being the largest of its kind in the world. And with more support from the central government, PRD is set out to become one of the world's leading technology hubs and home to high-profile tech firms such as Google and Apple.
