We start things off with tennis and the women's final of the Australian Open. Romania's Simona Halep came in as the world number one, but that ranking was up for grabs along with the trophy, as a victory for the second seeded Dane, Caroline Wozniacki, would see her reclaim the top spot after losing it six years ago. Both ladies were also chasing their first grand slam titles after coming up short on two occasions, setting the stage for an epic encounter in Rod Laver Arena.
There is Wozniacki who holds a 4-2 record over Halep, including wins in their last three meetings.
Wozniacki comes out attacking right away, swinging for the corners, and that aggression pays off as the 27-year-old Dane wins this point and later goes up 4-2.
Halep comes back and forces a tiebreaker, but it is dominated by Wozniacki, who takes it 7-2 to claim the first set.
Midway through the second, Halep feels dizzy and the medics check her blood pressure before she continues.
The break seems to help the 26-year-old, as Halep won three of the next four games and now has set point. Halep is the first player to save match points in multiple matches to reach the final of a slam, so she certainly knows about fighting back. And that's exactly what she does in this contest as Wozniacki will be unable to get back for this ball, so Halep takes the set 6-3 to force a decider.
Trailing 3-4 in the third frame, it's Wozniacki needing attention from the trainer on her left knee.
And just like Halep benefitted from her timeout, so too does Wozniacki, who won the next two games to hold a 5-4 lead. The Dane has always been known for her incredible defense, and it is showcased in this rally as she lunges for a backhand lob, then gets across the court for a forehand before racing back to the other side. Her tight angle forces a weak response from Halep and Wozniacki earns championship point.
Halep now faces the daunting task of trying to fend off match point for the third contest at this tournament. The Romanian goes down the line with a backhand, but once again Wozniacki keeps it going. Halep attacks the other line and then loads up for a backhand that she sends into the net and it's all over. Wozniacki collapses after winning the third set 6-4 to finally capture her first grand slam title in her 43rd attempt, and become the first Danish major singles champion.
