To tennis from "Down Under" and one of the final events before next week's first grand slam, the Australian Open. And we could be witnessing the makings of a star in Alex De Minaur. The youngster has rolled through the Sydney International, and was on the verge of winning his first ever tour title. The 18-year-old needing to beat Frenchman Benoit Paire to reach the final, and the young prodigy, showed some fight in disposing of the veteran.
We will pick things up on serve in the fifth game of the opener, the youngster serving and looks a little overwhelmed by his opponent's power, as Paire rips a forehand winner, en route to grabbing the set 6-4.
Second set now and the Aussie up 3-1 and shows off some quickness in getting to this drop shot, and then unleashing the passing shot, that helps him grab the frame 6-1, and forces a decider.
In the third, the 18-year-old gets a little lucky on this point, as his return clips the net, only to see Paire do the same. The Aussie unloads a lob over his opponent, that lands in.
We move to match point now, and De Minaur receiving serve, and again shows great court coverage chasing down a couple shots, and watching as Paire cannot handle another lob. The Aussie wins it in three sets and moves into the final in Sydney.
That is Russian qualifier Daniil Medvedev, serving to Fabio Fognini, the Italian fourth seed is able to get the better of this exchange at the net, and fires a winner into the open court as he grabs the frame 6-2.
In the second the Russian has a chance to break and take the frame, and exchanges in a baseline rally with Fognini, only to see the Italian unload a loose backhand into the net, giving Medvedev the set, and forcing a third frame.
The decider is all Medvedev, as he takes it 6-1 winning it with an ace, as Fognini barely moves. The Russian prevails in three sets and is into just his second career ATP final.
