Foreign ministers from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations have gathered in Singapore.

The island nation takes chairmanship for 2018 and has set "Resilience and Innovation" as the main theme. This meeting is for the bloc to agree on a common mechanism to combat extremist threats, cyber-security and form a regional extradition treaty. Singaporean foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan said in his opening statement that establishing "an ASEAN smart cities network" to help improve small and medium businesses was also high on the agenda.
