Meanwhile, at this year's Davos meeting, there's been plenty of support for free trade and globalization. Here's what some global leaders had to say.
LIU HE, DIRECTOR CPC CENTRAL LEADING GROUP FOR FINANCIAL & ECONOMIC AFFAIRS "President Xi Jinping has made decisions focused on four areas. The opening up of the financial sector and of manufacturing and services; protection of intellectual property rights; and an increase of imports."
KLAUS SCHWAB FOUNDER OF WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Our forum community certainly will recall the historic speech of President Xi Jinping last January, which many participants felt was a turning point in China's relationship with the world. During the year, at other important global meetings, like the belt and road forum, the G20, and APEC, President Xi continued to further develop many points which he raised in his Davos speech, culminating in his remarks to the 19th Party Congress in which he outlined his great vision for China's new era."
THERESA MAY BRITISH PRIME MINISTER "And as we leave the European Union, the UK will continue to be a global advocate of free trade, pushing for progress on WTO discussions seeking to bring new partners to the table, and of course after we have left the EU, developing new bilateral deals with countries across the world. But there is much more to be done by the whole international community, and frankly, too often our rhetoric in support of free trade here in Davos is not matched by our actions.''
JUSTIN TRUDEAU CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER "I have been very consistent in talking about NAFTA that it is a good deal for Canada, for the United States. It has been. It has created millions of jobs on both sides of the border and in Mexico over the years and it has created economic growth on our continent that has been remarkable.''
MAURICIO MACRI ARGENTINE PRESIDENT "Globalisation is a reality. We can't stop it. Our kids were born under a globalisation basis. No? They chat around the whole world, they travel through Internet knowing what happens in the whole world, e-commerce is boosting globalisation, so I think that it's something that we have to adapt to and our obligation as leaders is trying to find tools that work as buffers so citizens can adapt to all these changes in a better way.
