At least 10 people have been killed and several others are believed missing after a speed boat capsized in waters off North Kalimantan province in central Indonesia, reported Reuters citing local police and rescue officials.

The speed boat, which was heading to Tanjung Selor in Bulungan district, sank after sailing 1 kilometer off the coast of Pelabuhan Tengkayu on Tuesday, Xinhua said.

The boat was reportedly carrying around 47 people but there could have been passengers on board not on the manifest, a local official said.

A rescue operation is still underway.
