The Potala Palace is one of the landmarks of Tibetan architecture. On October 25, the palace's annual painting season began. More than three hundred volunteers, workers and firefighters were involved in the nine-day painting job.
The palace is painted in three different colors, with white representing peace, red representing authority, and yellow relating to religious customs. The paint work begins every year just before a three-hundred year old Tibetan festival, in which people burn incense and pray for peace.
