Australian Open: Halep dispatches Bouchard 6-2, 6-2
[]
Over on the women's side, current World No.1 Simona Halep would face Eugenie Bouchard. Their only previous meeting at a grand slam, came at the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2014, which the Canadian won. That victory helping her reach a peak at number five in the rankings. Things have not gone well since, as she has tumbled down the standings, and was even dealing with a concussion suffered at the U-S Open two years ago. Halep has seen her stock rise since that loss, thus her place atop the rankings, and the Romanian would look to claim a victory, as she pursues her first major title.
Halep was in control from the start, and is able to jump on a weak serve, setting her up for crisp volley and breaks to lead 5-2 in the opener, she takes the set 6-2. Things more or less the same in the second, as a forehand down the line can't be controlled by the Canadian. The Romanian prevails 6-2, 6-2 in 65 minutes, and faces American Lauren Davies next.
In other matches 17th seed Madison Keys sweeps past Ekaterina Alexandrova. Ashleigh Barty overcomes Camila Giorgi in three sets. Hsieh Su-Wei from Taiwan stuns Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza. Naomi Osaka and Angelique Kerber were also winners. In women's doubles Hsieh teamed up with China's Peng Shuai as the cross-straight pair were victorious. And China's Xu Yifan and her Canadian partner are on the court as we speak.
