Summer camps are becoming all the rage in Nigeria. Especially among parents seeking to broaden their children's skills in subjects not covered in standard school curricula. CGTN's Kelechi Emekalam spent a day with young people at one camp that's hoping to groom Nigeria's future tech entrepreneurs.
At 13, Bimisola Babaloa is already developing a career path. And it's all thanks to this holiday camp. nShe and her friends have spent nearly three weeks learning about web design, coding and animation. The cool geeks -- as they're fondly known as - are fascinated by the possibilities technology offers.
BIMISOLA BABALOLA, PARTICIPANT "I've always been interested in programming. I was learning before online so I decided to take it seriously a bit more and I've learnt a different language and I think it's best to get into the basic languages before you go higher up into the programming. And animation also, I have interest in animation - starting my own company some time in the future".
CHISOM ELEONU, PARTICIPANT "In future, I hope to become an animator with my own animation company which I've already started developing, it's called NEUROFLEX. I wish to also make cartoons, comic books. All those cartoon stuff, I'm really interested in it". The camp provides just enough training to pique their interest.
KAYODE BABALOLA, ANIMATOR "We are not going to create master professional animators of them in 3 weeks but we've succeeded in giving them an insight into the world of animation and they've responded greatly with enthusiasm."
About 40 young people have attended the cyber camp in the two years since it was founded. nIt's the brain child of Anyibofu Ugbodaga - an architect with a passion for mentoring young talent.
ANYIBOFU UGBODAGA, FOUNDER OF CYBERTECH CAMP "There's been all said about millennial and children of the millennial all over the world and I have noticed myself, they seem to be very lackadaisical about things thinking that, oh yeah, the world owes them something. The key thing is to let them know that from a young age, they can actually become entrepreneurs. It's like helping them develop entrepreneurial skills and then the tech business is an easy one to work with".
KELECHI EMEKALAM, ABUJA, NIGERIA "Tech business is steadily gaining momentum in Nigeria and millennials already captivated by computers and gadget-the urge to learn comes naturally. For the two years, this camp has been running none of the kids have not yet reached the point of setting a business but the kids exhibit a deep knowledge of what is taught here and who knows what they can do in the coming years.
