As cooperation and trade increase between China and India, the interest in learning Chinese has been increasing as well. In order to improve Chinese language education in India, Mumbai University's Confucius Institute invited Indian teachers to attend a two-day workshop to learn the latest language training skills.
“Learning language is important for our two peoples to enhance understanding. The two countries are friendly neighbors. I think language promotes the friendship between India and China,” said Zheng Xiyuan, the Chinese consul general in Mumbai.
Professor Vibha Surana, director of the Confucius Institute in Mumbai, said formal Chinese language programs may be in the offing in India.
“We need to intensify the teaching of Chinese Mandarin because at the moment we are not being able to produce Chinese experts with the current scenario, hence there is a very dire need to have bachelors and masters and at a later stage also Ph.D. for Chinese Mandarin,” Surana said.
Chinese direct investment in India was 1.2 billion US dollars between 2000 and 2015. During Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to India in September 2014, China committed to 20 billion US dollars in investment in the country over the next five years. Chinese companies have invested heavily in the past two years in the fields of telecommunications, manufacturing and infrastructure.
Mandarin language skills are expected to help business conditions for Chinese firms in India.
