Halep would be in front 5-3, and has a chance to seal the first frame on her opponent's serve -- and when the Japanese-American fires long, the Romanian takes the set 6-3.
The top-seed is more comfortable in the second, powering home a forehand down the line, and leads 5-2.
And victory is sealed with a forehand winner in the next game, as Halep prevails in an hour and 19 minutes. Halep extends her record of not having lost a fourth-round match on hard courts at a Grand Slam since the 2013 US Open.
Chinese Taipei's Hsieh Su-wei facing former champ Angelique Kerber for a quarter-final berth.
Hsieh, beat Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza, and former world number two Agnieszka Radwanska to get here, and looks like she could produce another upset, the drop shot leads to an easy winner, as the underdog takes the set 6-4.
Kerber though is able to improve her play in the second, and a big serve seals the set for her and we need a decider.
And the German would have control of the third serving at 5-2, Hsieh is able to prolong this point, but eventually the former world number one is able to come to the net and fire a winner into the open court, to seal a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 triumph. The two-time major winner is the only women left in the draw to have won a grand slam.
As for other results, six seed Karolina Pliskova fought back from a set down to reach the quarter-finals, with a three set victory over fellow Czech Barbora Strycova. Madison Keys sweeps past Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2.
