Chinese and Indian troops have been at a stalemate for around 20 days at the Sikkim section of the China-India border after India opposed China's attempt to extend a border road through the Doklam plateau.
China is seeking a peaceful resolution to the problem and ways to maintain stability, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang.
"The status quo can only be restored when the Indian army withdraws unconditionally from Chinese territory. That is also a precondition for a peaceful solution," he said. "China is building roads inside its own territory, which is a legitimate action by a sovereign country."
Saying China's road building has security implications is "ludicrous", said Geng, adding that India has built a number of facilities at the Sikkim section over the last few years, deployed troops, constructed fortifications on or across the border line and changed the status quo of the border area.
Meanwhile, a political counselor at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, Li Ya, said that India's arguments are groundless and that its troops must fall back immediately.
