China-UK Economic Ties: British trade minister visits China

And earlier we spoke with our reporter Richard Bestic in London, who told us more about the visit.
RICHARD BESTIC LONDON The British Trade Secretary's tour of Beijing and Shenzhen, a major Chinese trading hub in the south of the country, comes as the UK gears up for the next stage of Brexit talks – ultimately working out what kind of future relationship the UK wants with the European Union. In terms of trade, nothing can be formally agreed before the UK quits the EU in March 2019, but the government here is keen to put in the groundwork so deals can be signed as quickly as possible post Brexit. Globally, China is the UK's fifth largest trading partner, with trade between the two countries running at nearly $65 billion dollars, according to UK government figures.
The visit by Fox will also act as something of a curtain raiser for a planned tour at the end of the month by UK Prime Minister Theresa May. She'll be building on the good relations currently between China and Britain – but her big challenge lies ahead in the New Year when the Brexit trade talks with Brussels really get underway.
