Knot a Problem: Bangkok authorities untangle cables to make city safer
[]
In the Thai capital Bangkok, authorities are now untangling the electrical and telecom cables and moving them underground. It's part of the urban renewal started in 2014. The aim is to make Bangkok not only safer, but easier on the eyes and less prone to blackouts.
This is Wireless Road. But the busy thoroughfare, which runs through central Bangkok, doesn't live up to its name. Like many streets in the Thai capital, it's festooned with giant bundles of electrical and telecom cables, but now local authorities have launched a major drive to untangle the city streets.
PRASONK KUMPRADIT, ASST. GOVERNOR METROPOLITAN ELECTRICITY AUTHORITY "The main advantage we get is improved security in the electrical system. When the cables are underground, the problem with disturbances that can cause blackouts will be gone."
Bangkok's Metropolitan Electricity Authority says it's already removed more than a thousand utility poles from three of the city's biggest roads - including the tourism and business heartland of Sukhumvit. And over the next five years, they plan to de-clutter another 39 roads, removing more than a hundred kilometers of cables and burying them underground. The aim is to make Bangkok not only safer but more pleasing to the eye.
SUKANYA PHUANGDECH HOUSEWIFE "Taking the wires away is really great. It makes the city clean, clear and pleasant to look at. No more disorderly stuff. I feel like people are happier."
MARTIN FLETCHER TEACHER FROM ENGLAND "Bangkok's very famous for having all the electrical wires - and it's a bit like spaghetti, and they've been cleared, so it's a lot nicer now. It's a lot nicer for people to look at, I think."
Thailand's military rulers have made concerted efforts to impose some order on their chaotic capital in recent years, even clearing away many of Bangkok's famous street-food stalls. And while that decision may have caused dismay in some quarters, few will shed a tear when the cable clusters disappear underground.
