Millions of people across Indonesia live in areas with no access to clean water and sanitation. Authorities in the capital Jakarta have now launched a program providing free home makeovers to residents in low-income areas. 

Nursiyah is one of 40 million people living below the poverty line in Indonesia. Like many Indonesians, she lives on less than two US dollars per day. For years, she has been saving up to build a proper home for her family. Three months ago, the Jakarta administration offered her help.

Nursiyah told CGTN’s Silkina Ahluwalia that the "Home Makeover” project provides free renovations to improve living conditions to residents in low-income areas. The program organizers hope to reach a target of revamping at least 80 houses by September. They have successfully renovated more than 20 so far.

The program is a part of Indonesia's goal of becoming slum-free by 2019.
