Arab Foreign Ministers are meeting in Cairo to re-assess the latest developments in the Palestinian crisis. During this follow up meeting on Thursday, they will discuss further measures to take collectively, after the White House announced a preliminary date for relocating the embassy next year and cutting some of its aid to the Palestinians. Here is Adel EL Mahrouky with more.
Arabs have rejected Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The White House was indifferent though. Since then it has defied the global rejection, confirming that its embassy will move to Jerusalem next year. And it may have leaked Trump's peace plan, which deprives Palestinians from their right to return and have a capital in East Jerusalem.
SAEED ABU ALI ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL FOR PALESTINE, ARAB LEAGUE "It's an attempt to assassinate Palestine, we must understand that America is leaking rumors on purpose, to pass a deal that steals Palestinians' dream of their independent state. It's defying the will of the international community. Jerusalem is part of the occupied territories and internationally recognized as a capital for Palestinians, no one will let it go."
On Thursday, the Arab World's top diplomats will re-discuss Jerusalem's crisis. They will also propose plans to face the repercussion of another US decision against the Palestinian people. 65 million of America's 125 million dollar aid instalment has been frozen, worsening the humanitarian situation in the occupied territories.
SAEED ABU ALI ASSISTANT SECRETARY GENERAL FOR PALESTINE, ARAB LEAGUE "No observer in the region could misinterpret that the US move to cut aid is yet another aggressive policy against the Palestinian people and a continuation in pressuring them. It wants to force Palestinians to let go of their national rights. Cutting or freezing its aid to UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is a clear sign that the US is mixing humanitarian aid with politics which is against all norms."
The Arab League has been escalating. It held numerous meetings with Islamic, Arab and African leaders to support Jerusalem. During this Week's AU summit, the Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called Africa to stand against Israel's bid for a non-permanent seat at the Security Council.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO "Following Trump's decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, The Arab reaction doesn't seem influential enough for the White House to reconsider. President Trump is obviously moving forward with his plan and may continue to do so, if the Arab World doesn't succeed to agree on a firm position against Washington. AMA, CGTN, CA."
