The opposition alliance of Venezuela, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), has said it will not participate in President Nicolas Maduro’s plan to rewrite the constitution.
On May 1, Maduro called for the creation of a constituent assembly to draft a new constitution to lighten the political tension in the country.
The opposition has accused Maduro’s government however of attempting to “change the internal judicial order” and trying to avoid holding general elections.
"We have a constitution, and the government cannot repeal it by act of force. If the government wants to overrule it through force, it is wrong,” said MUD leader Henrique Capriles on Sunday.
Anti-government protests in Venezuela have left at least 36 dead and hundreds injured or jailed since April 1. Capriles said demonstrations would continue around the country, as demonstrators call for a general election.
