Not everyone is pleased with the decision. We took to the streets of Beijing to get the public's pulse on the issue.
Hainan Airlines announced the news just as the Spring Festival travel season, which is the peak travel season in China, is kicking off. Many pet owners, as well as animal lovers, welcome the airlines' new policy.
"I think it's good news. Before this, people had to check in their dogs as luggage. I think it's unfair to them."
"We all love animals. I think Hainan Airlines has done the right thing, as long as it doesn't disturb other passengers."
"Pets have become important companions for many people. This policy shows the airlines' humane care for pet owners and the animals. Many of my colleagues can't keep pets because they travel too much. I think this policy will solve this problem."
However, limits still exist. For example animals must stay in crates and the weight of the animal plus the crate has to be below 5 kilograms. And there are only two animals allowed in the cabin.
"I think the weight limit is too low. For my dog, he's already over 5 kilograms. He's a small dog, but still can't comply with the rules."
"I think the regulation is necessary. It helps to ensure flight safety and make sure other passengers will not be disturbed. If someone has to travel with pets, then they also have to comply with the rules."
For people traveling with kids or are allergic to animal hair, they still have their concerns.
"I don't want my grand daughter to sit next to a dog. She might be scared. And it can be unsanitary. I'm concerned about her health."
"Hainan Airlines or any other airlines should also perfect other measures related to this policy. For example, they should train flight attendants to know how to respond if a passenger has an allergic reaction."
