Food safety has been under the limelight in China, with fingers usually pointed at food suppliers for endangering public health. However, a fresh incident in Hong Kong has given a new angle to the debate: people rushing to consume expired food. Some 700 boxes of Japanese potato chips bags, which exceeded their shelf life, were destined to Tuen Mun landfill but instead were nabbed by residents, who were open to consuming the goods./ NetEase

A lady was seen grabbing two boxes, and said they were for her family. She did not seem to mind the quality, noting that they will be consumed “just few days after the expiry dates.” /NetEase

A man arrived with his spouse before starting to collect boxes, saying they will share them with neighbors. /NetEase

Residents knew about the delivery after information was posted online – which dumpster officers, who were surprised by the turnout, said was a first. The items expired on January 27, but they arrived one week later, on Saturday, to the dumpster. /NetEase
