Former Iowa Governor Terry Branstad has been sworn in as US ambassador to China. Branstad was the longest-serving governor in the US, being in the post for more than 22 years over two spells. The new ambassador and Chinese President Xi Jinping have known each other for some 30 years. The two first met when Xi visited Iowa in 1985. Branstad said he is looking forward to the adventure in China.

“There's no better job in the world than being governor of the state that you love, but sometimes we're called to serve in ways that we never imagine and now I'm pleased to present my letter of resignation as I prepare for this exciting new adventure as the United States ambassador to the People's Republic of China,” Branstad said.
