China has long been known as a country of silk, and even today it is still the largest producer of the lustrous fabric in the world. What most people do not know is that the finest products are not just from the region south of the Yangtze River, but also from the far western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
For a thousand years, Atlas Silk has been one of the most sought-after fabrics for Uygur women. In 2008, Atlas Silk was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage. But it's in danger of becoming a lost art.
CCTV reporter Han Bin visited the southern prefecture of Hotan, a major production center, where he sat down with a young Uygur fashion designer, Alim Adil, who believes the craft can weave new links along the 21st Century Silk Road.
