Australian zoo welcomes first baby Asian elephant in seven years

An Asian elephant calf has been born in Sydney's Taronga Zoo on Friday – the first in seven years. The male calf weighed 130 kilograms and was able to stand on its feet within five minutes of the birth. 

The last elephant calf born in the zoo was a female called Tukta, delivered by the same mother Pak Boon in 2010. 

The population of Asian elephants in the world is estimated at around 30,000 to 50,000, but the numbers are in decline.
