Protesters have clashed with police in Budgam district of Indian-controlled Kashmir, as a gun battle between Indian security forces and armed rebels began on Monday. People living in the district took to the streets and threw stones at Indian security forces, after reports said one rebel had been killed during the crossfire, which was triggered by a search operation by Indian security forces. Authorities have since suspended internet services in the area. An anti-India sentiment runs deep in Kashmir's mostly Muslim population, and most people support the rebels' cause against Indian rule. Nearly 70-thousand people have been killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military crackdown.
