To watersports now where following a non-scoring journey from Hong Kong, the Volvo Ocean Race reached Guangzhou yesterday ahead of the sixth leg of the 2017/2018 edition. So far its Spanish sailing crew MAPFRE leading the way with China's Dongfeng in second just four points behind. The Chinese boat has the chance to move into first when the competition gets going again, as the fleet prepare to set sail for Auckland next week.
First, there is an in-port race to deal with in the south China city. MAPFRE's wins in legs two and three have given them a slender advantage with about half the race to go.
Following a third place finish in 2015, Dongfeng's steady finishes of 5th, 6th, 12th and 6th once more mean they are the closest challengers to the top and are seven points ahead of Vestas 11th hour in third.
The Swiss-American outfit have 23 points, six behind their Chinese rivals and ten off the leaders. The in-port race gets underway later today with the route to New Zealand starting Wednesday.
